Citizen science initiatives that support collaborations between researchers and the public are flourishing. Public involvement in scientific endeavors can result in more flexibility, creativity, and diversity than traditional science. However, often citizen science occurs outside the bounds of institutional structures, which can have regulatory implications that could undermine the integrity of the research and safety of its participants. Professor McGuire will explore the ethical and regulatory implications of citizen science as a distinct form of scientific inquiry, using third party genomic interpretive services as a case study.
